Comparative Analysis of the Burial Rites of the Donets and Middle Don Catacomb Cultures

ABSTRACT
At the beginning of the 21st century, the classic of the study of the catacomb culture of the Middle Bronze Age, S.N. Bratchenko, proposed a new taxonomic unit - the Donetsk-Don (Don) catacomb culture, which absorbed the Donetsk, Middle Don and West Manich catacomb cultures. Today, there is no generally accepted and balanced approach among scientists to the differentiation of archaeological cultures, which significantly complicates their study. Quite often, as the main criterion for distinguishing cultures, scientists take secondary features as a basis, which leads to inappropriate pluralism in this issue. S.N. Bratchenko tried to create a clear system of differentiation of catacomb cultures. However, during his lifetime, the researcher did not have time to fully substantiate the theory he put forward and summarize all available materials. This created the basis for the rejection of the proposed taxonomic unit and the emergence of a number of discussions about it. The article is an attempt to argue the position of the classicist on the basis of a comparative analysis of the burial rite of the Donetsk and Middle Don catacomb cultures, namely such elements as the pose and orientation of the deceased. The results obtained indicate, if not the identity of the main elements of the burial rite of these catacomb cultures, then at least a great similarity. Thus, the proposal put forward by S.N. Bratchenko is confirmed at the statistical level. Therefore, the introduction of the taxonomic unit “Donetsk-Don (Don)” catacomb culture is appropriate and relevant. The article does not claim to be a comprehensive generalization, but is another attempt to substantiate the ideas put forward by the classic of the study of catacomb antiquities.
