ABSTRACT

The article introduces into scholarly circulation a new addition to the collections of the Archaeological Museum of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv—a grey-clay amphora containing a hoard of dolphin-shaped coins, accidentally discovered within the chora of ancient Olbia. Despite the loss of most of the complex and the absence of archaeological context due to the actions of “amateur searchers,” the author provides a detailed description of the preserved items—the amphora and eight bronze cast ingots in the form of “dolphins.” The study outlines the morphological features of the vessel and the coins, presents their measurements, and offers relevant analogies. The article highlights the scholarly value of the complex while also demonstrating the challenges of working with antiquities removed illegally, which lose much of their informational potential when proper contextual recording is lacking.

Keywords: antiquity, Olbia, hoard, numismatics, Olbian dolphin.
