ABSTRACT

The first Department of Archaeology in Ukraine was founded by corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR L.M. Slavin in 1944. During the 75 years of its existence, nearly one thousand staff members of the Institute of Archaeology of NASU, museums, universities and heritage protection institutions have been trained. Seven full-time teachers are working at the department (The head prof. R.V. Terpylovskyi, associate professors I.A. Kravchenko, S.M. Ryzhov, P.S. Shydlovskyi, Ye.V. Synytsia, K.O. Tretiak and PhD S.I. Ivanysko) and two support workers – L.G. Salata and M.V. Chymyrys. The Archaeological Museum of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv headed by L.G. Samoilenko, and the inter-departmental educational laboratory “Center for Underwater Archaeology, Archaeological and Ethnological Researches” headed by Ya.I Morozova work in close cooperation with the Department.

The department provides an adequate level of teaching of normative and special courses, and prepare bachelors of the Archaeology and Prehistory educational program and masters of the Archaeology educational program (specialty 032 “History and Archaeology”), and from 2018 – students of Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees of the new specialty 027 “Museum Studies, Monument Studies”. Archaeological and museum trainings allow students to consolidate theoretical knowledge. During 2004-2019, the geography of archaeological trainings was quite wide – from Transcarpathia to Middle Dnieper and Crimea.

The scientific achievements of the department, in particular, are related to the results of the study of archaeological sites, which belong to Middle and Upper Palaeolithic, Early Slavic and medieval times. Together with scientists from France, Germany and Switzerland, joint expeditions, archaeological material processing, mutual exchange of teachers, scientists and students were carried out, and scientific conferences were held. Scientific work has been embodied, in particular, in a series of publications, including the annual edition of VITA ANTIQUA, a number of monographs and textbooks. Now the Department is facing a number of complex issues, the solution of which will require our joint efforts.
